Music + Empathy

In an era of increasing division, it seems everyone in our culture - but most notably and perhaps surprisingly Christians - are becoming defined by who they hate and who hates them. It's as though each group in our culture lives in their own unique world disconnected from the others, and we can't see into the worlds around us - but perhaps we can "hear" into it. This session will be a continuation and conclusion of a previous session that explored the practice cultivating our personal empathy through the practice of seeking out perspectives that are different from our own as they are expressed through the craft of songwriting. This session will be part listening exercise, part spiritual and psychological reflection on the stories behind the music, and part music lesson. The intention is to call our community toward a deeper practice of engaging with lives that are different from our own without losing our own Gospel-centered identity.
